FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Helping The Red Cross To Help OthersSeptember 2, 2002
One of the most essential services offered by the Bahamas Red Cross is the provision of food to the needy. In Nassau and Freeport persons may be aware of the Meals-on-Wheels program that provides a daily meal to some 120 persons on a daily basis in Nassau and approximately seventy (70) in Freeport. Spread out in various neighborhoods, hot dinners reach recipients, mainly elderly house bound, and pre school age children, thanks to the various volunteers and our Welfare Department. For the walk-ins, a food parcel is provided which can include canned soup, rice, canned meats/fish and minimal hygiene items. Regular assistance by the Red Cross in Nassau to the Family Islands is the way of boxes of groceries and personal care items sent to needy persons, identified by the Red Cross Group Leaders and our Welfare Department on their visits, as well as by calls from concerned neighbors and officials in the settlements. Red Cross tries to ship these "needy" boxes at least quarterly. Bedding and clothing continue to be provided to walk-ins and fire victims. Clothing for small children is always in demand. The efforts of many persons are required to meet this great need and the volunteers who donate canned goods and dry food products are to be commended for their wonderful community spirit. The Bahamas Red Cross reminds all of us to be mindful that whatever little we have, there is someone who has even less and with whom we can share.
